'Appearances' looks at the connection between fashion and the photography of influential figures such as Walker Evans and Robert Frank, highlighting that fashion photography has a broader reach.

Martin Harrison studies the role of magazine culture, the great art directors and editors who defined the mood of the post-war decades. Featuring works by famous photographers such as Richard Avedon, Irving Penn and Bruce Weber, it also showcases iconic and lesser-known images.

In the last chapter he addresses the impact of artists such as Cindy Sherman and Robert Mapplethorpe, who, although not directly part of the fashion industry, have influenced the aesthetics and climate of the time. By the 1990s, fashion photography merged with photographic art, becoming essential to understanding modern culture and visual media.
