Meet The Designer
Jersey Ice Cream Co was founded in the summer of 2010. Two kids in love found an old embossing stamp at a flea market, dreamed up a design empire, and then set to work trying to create it. Today Tara Mangini and Percy Bright spend their time moving house to house, job to job, leaving beautiful homes in their wake. They believe in craftsmanship, timelessness, and leaving things better than they found them. They do not make ice cream, but will happily have some if you’re offering.

Tips from the Experts
The biggest challenge in designing a home and how to overcome it?
The biggest challenge in designing a home is definitely the overwhelming feeling that comes in waves—it’s a bit of a rollercoaster ride. I find it incredibly helpful to have strong touchstones that remind me of what I want the space to look and feel like. Images are great, but sometimes places or scenes from a movie can be even better. Something visceral you can return to when you inevitably get lost down a Pinterest rabbit hole or start second-guessing every decision. Having that guiding light keeps me on track, helping me fine-tune not just what I like, but what’s truly right for the space. The more you can learn to trust your gut, the easier it is to move through the process.
What makes a house feel like a home?
Time, clutter, piles of books, flowers wilting in a vase. So much of what we see out there are these “perfect” spaces, but it’s the imperfections that truly make a space feel inviting. Leave room for the unexpected, for the makeshift, for the 10 different paint samples on the wall that you end up loving. It’s all those little things that fall into place, naturally, that give a space life.
The one thing I always tell my clients:
I’m sure I tell them plenty, but two big things come to mind. First, this is going to take longer than you think, and that’s ok. Planning for that can make such a difference. But even beyond the endless delays and setbacks, going slow is key. It gives you time to understand what the house needs, what you need, how the light moves through the space, and which colors and patterns truly feel right. It gives you the freedom to be curious and inspired, to stumble upon something you love that becomes the foundation for an entire room. That joyful, exploratory phase is essential for creating a space you’ll truly love, and not rushing through it gives you a better chance of getting it right. Second, you are creating this house for YOU. So many people get caught up in trends or the pressure of what’s “perfect.” I tell my clients time and time again—no one is grading you on this. Buy what you love, choose colors and textures that speak to you, and create a space that helps you live the way you want to live.
