How to Channel Iconic British Cinema In Your Home Style
How many times have you been watching a film and got distracted by the captivating sets instead of focusing on the plot? Consider us guilty as charged.
As part of our Very British Summer campaign, we’ve picked four of our favourite British flicks to bring a slice of the big screen into your home. From the aristocratic grandeur of Saltburn to the pastel-hued world of Bridgerton, read on for inspiration – no production design team necessary.
Saltburn
The setting for Emerald Fennell’s psychological thriller Saltburn is just as enthralling as the film’s unpredictable plot. The Catton family’s country manor is eccentric English decor at its best; old-money heritage collides with lived-in maximalism to create effortless grandeur. Lean into the baroque aesthetic with ornate patterns, traditional pieces and plush fabrics inside, while the film’s summery mood can be captured with the classic outdoor accoutrements like a swing and patio furniture decked out in ticking stripes.
Bridgerton
Regencycore has taken over our collective imagination in recent years thanks to Shonda Rhimes’ hit show Bridgerton. Lavish fabrics, ornate finishes and antique furniture all create the era’s regal glamour, all swathed in the series’ signature pastel palette. You don’t have to be a history buff (or live in Grosvenor Square) to recreate the look, though. Wicker furniture, soft tones and delicate feminine details aplenty give a nod to period decor and impress the Ton.
The Gentlemen
Steeped in his signature enticing cinematic aesthetic, Guy Ritchie’s series The Gentlemen is a lesson in quintessentially British flair. From the costumes to the sets, the series is steeped in rich, sumptuous style that Martyn John, Head of Production Design, describes as “like looking at a grandmaster’s painting”. The English manor house setting provides the perfect backdrop for the macho, aristocratic gangster style that Ritchie is best known for.
Bridget Jones's Diary
A cult classic for a reason, Bridget Jones is a film we could watch on repeat endlessly, and not just for the plot. Bridget’s flat has become something of an icon in its own right thanks to the heroine’s shabby-chic and charmingly chaotic approach to interior design. Pastel shades, eclectic mismatched accessories and cosy soft furnishings perfectly encapsulate the accessible noughties normcore aesthetic.
