For Sydney-based interior designer Imogen Reed, founder and principal designer of IJR Studio, crafting a restaurant’s aesthetic is about more than just design—it’s about storytelling. Known for her ability to blend vintage influences with modern sensibilities, Imogen’s spaces feel transportive, layered, and full of character.

When it came to Taqiza, a vibrant taqueria in Bondi Beach, the vision was clear: a space that effortlessly fuses the sun-soaked nostalgia of mid-century Palm Springs with the rich textures of a Mexican hacienda. We love seeing how designers bring our products to life, and Imogen’s use of Tinker & Tallulah’s lampshades at Taqiza is a perfect example of lighting as a transformative design element. Inspired by Slim Aarons’ resort photography and traditional Mexican architecture, Taqiza was designed as a timeless retreat from Bondi’s bustle. Restored hardwood chevron floors anchor the space, complemented by soft lime-washed pink walls reminiscent of Mexico’s historic adobes. Deep green accents, rich textures, and mid-century touches create a refined yet playful aesthetic.

A key element of this balance is the custom Tinker & Tallulah lampshades. Originally seeking vintage, tiki-inspired pendants, sourcing proved difficult—until Tinker & Tallulah stepped in. The boutique brand collaborated with Imogen to craft bespoke hessian lampshades, mirroring mid-century wicker styles. Trimmed in Taqiza’s signature pink and green, they seamlessly integrate into the design, casting a soft, ambient glow that enhances the restaurant’s inviting warmth.

Suspended above the bar, the lampshades complement the green marble countertops, rattan paneling, and bespoke glass tabletops. Their diffused glow shifts throughout the day, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. Guests and the restaurant team alike have praised the lighting for transforming Taqiza into more than just a dining spot—it’s an experience. This project highlights how statement lighting can define an entire space, proving that thoughtful design goes beyond aesthetics. With Taqiza now a beloved Bondi Beach fixture, Imogen Reed continues to craft spaces rich in nostalgia, texture, and function. And Tinker & Tallulah’s lampshades? They’ve truly found their perfect home.

Morris & Co. fabric lampshade with tiered fringe

Created by William Morris in 1876, the Snakeshead pattern was inspired by Indian textiles and features the flame-like blooms and striking foliage of the Snake’s Head Fritillary plant. They have handcrafted this lampshade using luxurious fabric from the Morris & Co. collection, and added our signature touch with decorative braiding and a tiered fringe in the same elevated palette of gold and pewter.
